Virgin Prunes - Sons Find Devils
Sons Find Devils video

Sons Find Devils (Video PAL/VHS, Ikon FCL IKON14, 1985)

Includes excerpts from the unreleased New Form of Beauty video and “Rhetoric” video produced by John Balance and Peter Christopherson. “Bernie and Attracta Sing” and “Down the Memory Lane” are backstage singalongs. Two covers were issued – the first batch of releases had a colour enhanced photo collage, subsequent ones were plain black with yellow text.

Shaun Morris attributes live material to the following performances: “Most of the live stuff was filmed at the Hacienda in Manchester, England. The bits with Gavin in a white shirt were from 2/3/83 and the bits where he’s wearing the red crushed velvet outfit were filmed on the 30/11/83. During “Come To Daddy” there are some clips of Guggi in a gold/snakeskin? mini skirt – this was from the show in Lausanne, Switzerland on 5/2/83. The “New Form Of Beauty” bits were from the Douglas Hyde Gallery, Dublin on 7/11/81 & 8/11/81. The backstage footage was from Vienna during February ’83. “Rhetoric” & “The Pig Children” I’m unsure of the venue and dates although “Rhetoric” could be from a show they did in Bologna, Italy in 1983.”

Virgin Prunes - Heresie gatefold

Heresie (2 x 10”, Baby Records BABY011, 1988)

The first Virgin Prunes re-release came in a cardboard gatefold sleeve with notes from Mary and Strongman. The run-off grooves of the record show the old Invitation au Suicide catalogue numbers scratched off and replaced with the Baby Records detailed. The first pressings of this release were available in clear vinyl and incorrectly listed Pagan Lovesong twice on Disc 2.

      • We love Deirdre
      • Rhetoric
      • Down the Memory Lane
      • Man on the corner
      • Nisam Lo
      • Loved One
      • Go ‘t’ away Deirdre
      • Caucasian Walk

      • Pagan Lovesong
      • Theme for Thought
      • Come to Daddy

…if I die, I die (CD, Rough Trade ROUGH CD49, 1991)

On this re-release, Ulakanakulot/Decline and Fall is mastered too slowly, and the 12” version of Baby Turns Blue was used by mistake.

      • Ulakanakulot/Decline and Fall,
      • Sweethome under white clouds
      • Bau-dachöng
      • Pagan Lovesong
      • Baby Turns Blue
      • Ballad of the man
      • Walls of Jericho
      • Caucasian Walk
      • Theme for Thought

1993 New Rose releases

The 1993 re-releases on New Rose Records include an insert advertising them as “Virgin Prunes: The Baby catalogue – The definitive collection of Virgin Prunes Recordings”. It gives Baby catalogue numbers for all the recordings, although none of these appear either on the CD sleeves or the discs themselves. Apparently, this was a mistake on the part of New Rose Records, the distributors. The numbers are:

  • BABY 1 – Pagan Lovesong
  • BABY 20 – A New Form of Beauty
  • BABY 30 – …if I die, I die
  • BABY 40 – Heresie
  • BABY 50 – Artfuck
  • BABY 60 – The Moon Looked Down and Laughed
  • BABY 70 – The Hidden Lie

Pagan Lovesong (CD, New Rose Records 453041, 1993)

The “tormentallama” mix was produced by Ian Bryan at STS Studios (Dublin) in March 1993.

      • Pagan Lovesong (tormentallama),
      • Love Lasts Forever (lovelornalimbo),
      • Pagan Lovesong (vibeakimbo),
      • Dave-id Is Dead

A New Form of Beauty (CD, New Rose Records 452042, 1993)

The sleeve is based on the “crumpled paper” sleeve of the original releases, but is not exactly the same as previous versions.

      • Sandpaper Lullaby
      • Sleep/Fantasy Dreams
      • Come to daddy
      • Sweet Home (Under White Clouds)
      • Sad World,
      • “Beast” (Seven Bastard Suck)
      • “The Slow Children” (Abbágall/Brain Damage/No Birds to Fly)

…if I die, I die (CD, New Rose Records 452043, 1993)

The errors in the previous re-release of this album were corrected for this version. The cover photograph is slightly different to that of the original version.

      • Ulakanakulot/Decline and Fall
      • Sweethome under white clouds
      • Bau-dachöng
      • Pagan Lovesong
      • Baby Turns Blue

      • Pagan Lovesong

The Hidden Lie (CD, New Rose Records 422473, 1993)

This version had a completely new cover.
