Name and Members
Published 06-09-03

The group had a particular trait of giving new names to the people and things around them, stemming from the Lypton Village ethos of providing an alternative space for self-expression away from the norm of mid-1970s Dublin life.
The group’s name and its members’ names have been explained in various interviews. Other names given by the group include Jigsawmentallama (a character from the Dublin meat packers) and Ulakanakulot (a similar concept to nirvana - a place of beauty and tranquility).
I have also included details of all the musical projects that the group’s members have been involved in (currently slightly out of date - sorry), though this will eventually move to a page of its own.
Name
The band’s name baffled me at first. It seemed so completely bizarre and meaningless. The discovery of the following explanations was enlightening. And I still live in hope of finding a tin of virgin prunes in the local supermarket, somewhere between the olive oil and the canned fruit…
— Gavin, in “Quest for Fire”, a interview with Paul Du Noyer in New Musical Express, 3 July 1982.
— Unidentified middle-aged man in TV feature on the Virgin Prunes, possibly 1983.
